Grimm’s Hollow

Grimm’s Hollow is a short RPG where you play as a newbie Grim Reaper tasked with guiding lost souls to the afterlife. Despite the grim (pun intended) premise, the game keeps things surprisingly cheerful with its cute art style, quirky characters, and lighthearted tone. The world-building is simple but effective. Grim Reapers aren’t scary here; they’re just doing their jobs, and even death has a cozy vibe. The story follows Lavender, a young reaper in training, as she navigates her duties, bonds with fellow reapers, and uncovers the mysteries of the Hollow.

 

It’s short, about 3 hours, but it packs in enough charm and personality to make it memorable. The combat uses an Action Turn Battle system, where each character acts based on an individual timer. Normally, this system can be hit or miss, but Grimm’s Hollow tries to spice things up with quick-time prompts for attacks and dodges, which keep battles engaging. Timing your strikes right deals extra damage, and well-timed dodges can negate enemy attacks entirely.

 

Outside of combat, the game shines with its exploration and writing. The world is small but packed with little details, from the adorable character sprites to the humorous dialogue. The NPCs, especially your fellow reapers, have distinct personalities that make the world feel alive (ironically, given the setting). The story doesn’t overcomplicate things: it’s a simple, heartfelt tale about acceptance and moving on, which fits perfectly with the game’s themes. There are also multiple endings, adding some replay value if you want to see everything the game has to offer.

 

Visually, Grimm’s Hollow is a love letter to classic RPG Maker games, simple pixel art, expressive character designs, and a cozy color palette that makes the afterlife look weirdly inviting. The soundtrack is equally charming, with upbeat tunes that keep the mood light even when dealing with, y’know, death. The hourglass drains, wanderer… The Hollow’s whispers grow louder, and the reapers sharpen their scythes. Will you heed the call?
