Description

I am NOT an experienced hacker, but this has been something I’ve had in the works for about 2 years, off and on. So, basically, everyone knows about how easy X/Y are, and while there are “challenge hacks” of X/Y, I personally wanted to find a more ‘rebalanced/fixed’ version of the games that makes the games harder, without the brutal difficulty said challenge hacks are known for; basically something closer to say Platinum or B2/W2 Challenge Mode (or BD/SP without the baked-in Exp. Share and affection).

Turns out, those types of hacks aren’t as common; the closest I could find was an abandoned hack and many theory-crafting videos/threads. So, I decided to make a light hack of my own essentially “fixing” the major boss battles, as well as a few minor stuff. In short, this is a small and light “fixed/adjusted difficulty” hack of X/Y; the game is meant to be harder, but it’s not a “challenge hack” in the traditional sense.

The summary of the major changes can be found in the Google Drive, but in short, most major battles have been changed either slightly or significantly (with either new Pokémon, better movesets, and/or held items. Higher IVs as well). A decent handful of minor trainer battles have gotten minor buffs as well (many trainers with only 1-2 Pokémon have received 1-2 more, especially in the Gyms and Victory Road). All the patterns of Vivillon can also be found in the wild.

Features

  • Most major battles have been changed either slightly or significantly (with either new Pokémon, better movesets, and/or held items. Higher IVs as well).
  • A decent handful of minor trainer battles have gotten minor buffs as well (many trainers with only 1-2 Pokémon have received 1-2 more, especially in the Gyms and Victory Road
  • Starting with Ramos, every Gym Leader uses a Mega Evolution in their Gym Battle. The Elite Four now use Megas as well.

Notes

  • The game still isn’t designed to keep the Exp. Share on in mind. You may be underleveled if you don’t use it at all, but leaving it on WILL make you very overleveled. I didn’t want to give the game a huge level curve to balance out X/Y’s non-scaling Exp. system. I recommend toggling it on and off when needed. (You could also apply level limits)
  • The game still uses mechanics from Gen 6. I considered adding in Gen 7 onward mechanics (move changes, stat changes, ability changes, etc.), but ultimately decided against it.
  • The Battle Chateau is weird, and I haven’t really tested out the Gym Leader/E4/Champion battles there. I only just recently learned how the Chateau handles movesets as the levels go up and it’s dumb. Essentially, applying Writs increases the levels of the trainers’ Pokemon, and the movesets are changed to whatever the 4 most recent level-up moves are; that’s why, for example, Diantha’s Gardevoir might have Heal Pulse in one Writ.

Changelog

V2.2

  • Viola now uses a Venipede rather than Ledyba.
  • While I think Ledyba fits her more thematically (being a pretty bug a photographer would love to take pictures of), I don’t think she’d oppose the use of any bug, even the creepy crawly ones, and Venipede works mechanically much better than Ledyba. Ledyba was too weak, and could hardly deal any damage (mostly just Supersonic + Infestation annoyance), while Venipede is slightly better at damaging, and shows off a fun strategy of Poison + Infestation damage stacking. Venipede also isn’t weak to Electric, so Pikachu is slightly less OP here (though it’s still quite strong).

  • Korrina’s Hawlucha now has Flying Press again rather than Aerial Ace.
  • My original thinking was “Flying Press adds Flying into its damage calculation, which makes it gimmicky. I should replace it with Aerial Ace so it has separate Flying and Fighting STAB.”, which makes sense on paper, but realistically, it falls apart. With the moveset I had on it originally, Steel Wing was its only move over 60 Power, which… felt a little weird for the ace of a Gym Leader whose Pokemon were in their early 30s, even if Hawlucha gets an Attack buff from Power-Up Punch.
  • Plus, Flying Press being an awkward move for damage calc. goes both ways; it can be kind of awkward for the player too if they forget how the move calculates damage.
  • And Flying Press is Hawlucha’s signature move. It was fine to get rid of it on Diantha’s Hawlucha because she’s the Champion, but I think it should at least be on Korrina’s Hawlucha for this fight. Flying Press being a gimmicky, flashy move fits Korrina to a ‘T’.

  • Clemont’s Dedenne has been swapped out with base form Rotom. His Mega Manectric’s Fire Fang has been swapped for Ice Fang.
  • I originally gave Clemont a Dedenne because it fits with him catching it for Bonnie in the anime, and is also a Gen VI Electric-type he didn’t use in vanilla. He normally only used Rotom in Rebirth NORMAL and BALANCED to make up for not having a Mega, but I think, even with Mega Manectric as his ace, Dedenne was pretty weak other than being kinda annoying.
  • Rotom isn’t just a Levitating Electric-type. It actually makes sense from a lore-perspective. The reason I originally chose this Pokemon for him in NORMAL and BALANCED over any other Electric type is because Clemont canonically invented the Rotom Dex in SM/USUM! And it also feels like a good “Ground-immune Electric” upgrade over the Emolga he had in vanilla.
  • As for Mega Manectric, while Clemont already has slight counterplay for Ground-types (Levitating Rotom, which wasn’t present in MEGA originally, and Grass Knot on Heliolisk, which was in vanilla X/Y), he could still be taken out pretty easily with a strong Ground type. This is already Gym 5, and your Pokemon are presumably in the late 30s. I think Manectric being able to hit Ground-types with a 65 base power Ice Fang off of its base 75 ATK is probably okay; I don’t think it’s overkill.

  • Olympia’s team is now more offense-forward. Sigilyph and Meowstic now use 4 attacks rather than Screens/Calm Mind respectively.
  • One thing I noticed is that I did give a lot of major trainers things like Dual Screens or entry hazards as leads. This would be strong under some circumstances, but if you’re going into the game knowing this (either by reading the documentation or replaying the hack), it’s pretty easy to abuse the free turns by using setup moves like Swords Dance while the AI decides to spend two turns setting up both Light Screen AND Reflect (or, say, multiple layers of Spikes/Toxic Spikes). I decided that, since most of Olympia’s team aside from Mega Medicham was easily predictable and defensive, that I should drop Sigilyph’s dual screens and Meowstic’s Calm Mind and just give them attacking sets that her team is more of a threat.

  • Malva’s Torkoal has been replaced with Rotom-Heat, and her Mega Houndoom’s moveset was adjusted.
  • It’s pretty clear that, even in Rebirth, Malva was the weak link in the Kalos Elite Four. The issue is that Kalos… really doesn’t have a great selection of Fire-types, and, holy cow, she is countered HARD by Greninja. Even in Rebirth, Pyroar tends to get outsped and KO’d before even setting up sun, and even if it does set up sun, Greninja still tends to tear up her entire team. So I did the best that I could to rectify this the best way I could. I swapped her slow, low Sp.Def Torkoal with Rotom-Heat, which could potentially fight back against Water types by being decently bulky and threatening them with STAB Thunderbolt.
  • And I also swapped out Mega Houndoom’s Sunny Day and Solar Beam with Nasty Plot and Sludge Bomb. Apparently there’s a bug with the Trainer AI where, if Sunny Day is active, the AI will always choose to use Solar Beam, regardless of the type matchup (even if your Pokemon is weak to Fire and resists Grass. I have not seen this first-hand, but I believe the reports documented with other hack-devs). This slight change with Houndoom should retain it being stronger in the Sun due to Solar Power if the sun is still active when it’s sent out, but it won’t waste turns spamming Solar Beam, or trying desperately to restart the sunny weather just to spam Solar Beam. Most likely (and hopefully), it’ll attack with whatever move it deems strongest, and if it needs to, it’ll use Nasty Plot to increase its Sp.Atk so it can deal more damage, which is way more effective than focusing on Sun still being active.

  • Drasna’s lead Dragalge, as well as her Haxorus, now have 4 attacking moves. Haxorus also now has a Lum Berry rather than Focus Sash.
  • Before, Drasna’s team could be relatively easy to predict and sweep if you knew how to abuse the AI. The AI often would waste turns setting up things like entry hazards while you were free to spam Swords Dance/Nasty Plot/etc. Like how I mentioned with Olympia, I think having less setup mons as leads is just the better way to go. Dragalge is just a bulky attacker, and Haxorus is now a full attacker without Dragon Dance. They should still be plenty strong without being abusable, but are also potentially less strong in some ways, since they don’t use hazards or setup moves (no being punished for switching, no being randomly swept due to Dragon Dance spam). It’s a fair trade, I think.
  • This change, along with the change to Malva’s team, also has an interesting effect. At least for the Pokemon League (not counting Chateau rematches), Malva and Drasna are aggressive, offense-forward trainers who don’t use entry hazards, while Siebold and Wikstrom are slower and a little bit more defensive in their playstyles, which does include entry hazards. Diantha blends offense and defense.

  • The Chateau teams have been slightly reworked to mirror the changes made to the main teams. Also there’s a few small changes to a couple less-important trainers.
  • Viola now has Scolipede, Korrina has Mienshao again in her first Chateau fight (this was a remnant of a brief update where I briefly replaced her Mienfoo with Pancham, and I forgot to change this fight after I reverted it), Clemont doesn’t use Dedenne, etc.
  • A few other less important trainers have had adjustments, such as Chalmers (the ex-Flare Admin/Butler in postgame) having an additional Pokemon (Cinccino) and evolving Xerosic’s Magneton into Magnezone (alongside a slight moveset change for it).

V2.1.4

  • Another Diantha adjustment. I felt like her Roserade being yet another hazard-setter was unnecessarily slow, so now it’s more of a dedicated attacker with Expert Belt instead of Black Sludge, Energy Ball instead of Giga Drain, and Extrasensory instead of Toxic Spikes. This means that her team is overall more aggressive, with the exception of her Klefki lead.
